Leon Smith now a free agent, possibly eyeing Rockets?
This is something we discussed a while back, but it continues to get interesting. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the Mavericks have reached an agreement in principle to make troubled rookie Leon Smith a free agent. Reportedly his 3 year, $1.5 million deal will be paid off over 10 years, with a final agreement set to be announced next week. Leon, who came to the pros from high school, was interviewed by FOX Sport's Mark Berman Thursday, the first open interview Smith has done since his apparent suicide attempt. Leon has run into some serious problems lately and is currently in Houston working out with Moses Malone, player rep Purvis Short (both Retro Rocks by the way) and others at the Westside Tennis Club trying to get straightened out. Though it was not included in the printed interview, Rocketball of the Clutch BBS writes that Leon did say in the interview that if his contract with Dallas is voided completely, and he becomes a free agent, that he would like to sign with Houston. Also unconfirmed reports say Leon has sat behind the Rockets bench the past 2 games. This is not close to happening and may never happen... just interesting info to pass along. If the Rockets are willing to take a chance on him (a big "if"), it wouldn't be a shock to see him in a Rocket uniform next year or possibly farther down the road.
